B&W 805D

B&W’s world renowned 800 series speakers just got an overhaul. The 805D, B&W’s ultimate bookshelf speaker, was just released to take the place of the 805s. All of the 800 series speakers are now built 100% in the UK, with a new cabinet facility recently uprooted in West Sussex. The tweeter has received substantial upgrades, employing quadruple magnets, which has raised the frequency and dynamic ranges. All of the same technologies such as the Nautilus cavity behind the tweeter dome, single-piece curved cabinets, Kevlar bass/midrange driver, Flowport air-flow system, and top-of-the-line crossovers make this speaker the best in its class.
The only problem we have found with this speaker is that because it is so new, hardly anyone has had the opportunity to write anything about them. The little feedback we have received from B&W eludes to the new 800 series speakers to be almost too good of an upgrade, because the improvement over the slightly less expensive and older 800-series speakers is so drastic it may result in a fairly significant loss of value for owners of the older versions. Dave Holmes, president of Audio Emporium, says in regards to the newly re-released 802D, “I’m just so surprised that this level of improvement was possible. As I’ve gotten to know and love 802D, I would not have thought you could have made this level of improvement for a modest $1k retail upcharge.”
